That roar you hear at the multiplex this week can be measured in dollars as well as decibels. Hollywood enjoyed a record 2009 in terms of dollars grossed, raking in $10.6 billion in the United States and Canada, and $26.3 billion worldwide. Domestically, the numbers are up by a billion dollars, or 10 percent over 2008, according to veteran industry analyst Paul Dergarabedian at Hollywood.com. Globally they're up $2.3 billion, just under 10 percent, according to Rentrak, a company that tabulates movie box office.
In the Philadelphia region, according to Rentrak, $234 million in tickets were sold last year, 10.3 percent above the $212 million in 2008. The local increase was slightly higher than the overall 10.1 percent rise in the domestic box office. The local figures are for the Philadelphia Designated Market Area, an 18-county region that runs from Allentown to Cape May.
In terms of tickets sold, the 1.42 billion ducats bought this year remain below the record-setting 1.61 billion sold in 2002. "Still, 2009 marks the highest attendance since 2006," Dergarabedian said yesterday. According to his figures, "The last week of 2009 alone accounted for $500 million at the box office." That is a 20 percent jump over the 2008 holiday week.
